Pool Filters Canada

Canadian swimming pool owners need to be able to depend and rely on their pool filters to provide them with optimum and trouble-free performance all season long. A filter is a key component in both inground and above-ground systems as it helps supply the pool with crystal-clear, sparkling water. There are several types of filtration systems to choose from including sand and cartridge (DE) options. At Discount Pool Supply we offer numerous and sizes and styles of filters to meet the unique demands of all Canadian pool owners.  We carry a full line of Hayward, Pentair, Waterway, Jandy, Jacuzzi, Midwest, Game, American Grandby, Unicell and Sta-Rite swimming pool filters.

No matter what you do to try and keep your pool water clean, there’s no possible way to keep it from blowing dust and debris in the air. If the water isn’t properly filtered it can quickly turn cloudy and become a breeding ground for algae. A filter will help to eliminate the dirt by trapping it and sending clean water back to the pool. It does this as the water passes through the filter on a continuous basis several times per day. If you’d like some assistance when deciding what type and size of filter is needed for your pool please feel free to contact us at Discount Pool Supply.

Sand Filters
High-rate sand filters consist of a large metal, concrete, or fibreglass tank which is filled with a thick bed of special sand. The pool’s water enters the filter through an inlet pipe and it’s then pulled through the sand. The small particles of dirt and debris in the water are caught in the sand during the filtering process and the clean water is then sent back to the pool via the outlet pipe. The collected debris and dirt from the water in the sand will slow the water flow over time. However, the filter’s pressure gauges will indicate what the level of blockage is.

If the gauges show there is more pressure on the inlet pipe than there is on the outlet pipe, then you’ll know the sand inside has collected quite a bit of dirt and debris. This can simply be rectified though by backwashing the filter, which can be done by adjusting the unit’s valve to the backwash position. The water flow will then be redirected at it is drained through the sewer or waste system. The water can dislodge the collected dirt and debris from the sand as the water is pumped upwards and it flows out via the inlet pipe to the sewer.

Sand filters are still quite common throughout Canada as they’re quite simple to use and relatively easy to install. They don’t require much in the way of maintenance, but the sand will need to be replaced every few years. These filters are ideal for all sizes and shapes of pool since they also come in a variety of sizes and shapes themselves. At Discount Pool Supply we carry several lines of inground and above ground filters and parts which are manufactured by some of the best pool equipment companies in the business. These include American Grandby, Game Hayward, Jacuzzi, Jandy, Pentair, and Midwest.

Cartridge Filters (Diatomaceous Earth)
Cartridge filters are also popular with Canadian pool owners and may be known as diatomaceous earth (DE) filters. With these models, diatomaceous earth coats the filter grids and the pool water passes through it. Diatomaceous earth is actually a fine powder which is produced from the fossilized remains of diatoms, which are chemically inert sea organisms. The powder is placed in a cartridge filter which is made of corrugated paper or polyester cloth. When the dirt and debris starts to block the filter you just need to take the filter out and wash it off before reinstalling it. Some of the better filters can last for up to eight years before they need to be replaced.
